  1. Shutdown? Speak Out!

    October 31, 2010 by sunrisesister

So tomorrow, apparently we are being urged to steer clear of Twitter and Facebook in a Communication Shutdown. This idea is made with such good intent, I can tell, but I cant help but think it’s a little counter-productive. Autistic children (and adults) often struggle to communicate. So don’t shut down communication to support them. Donate, sure, but be sure to tell everyone why, how and where!

Instead, I will be on Twitter and Facebook, as usual, posting links to resources, information, and answering any questions that come my way about autism.

I am not an expert, by any means, but I am a parent of an autistic child.

W was diagnosed when he was 4. Some think that’s ‘late’, but to us it was all very overwhelming to absorb so many potential ‘what if’scenarios all at once. But we had amazing caregivers; a GP, a peadiatrician, a psychologist specialising in ASD, a speech pathologist, teachers, and aides. As a result, we have an incredibly happy, settled and creative young boy.

There was a time, though, when he wasn’t verbal. He would not make eye contact with us, would not communicate more than a frustrated cry, scream, pointing and babbling. He was impossible to toilet train. I had to delay preschool once, twice, and almost a third time. We didn’t even know if he would be able to attend a ‘normal’ school – something that frightened me, thinking that this would set him back even further. Luckily this wasnt the case, and he is happily attending the same school as his sisters.

I knew there was something different about him, from birth, but my method of parenting meant that we went with the flow, and trusted that the answers would come when we were ready. He had more urgent medical needs as a baby.

Today, W is an eloquent, clever, smart, communicative, emotional boy. He’s seriously into comic books, sci fi, tv, and Lego. Seriously, mega into Lego. He is horribly arachnophobic, hates fresh tomato, but eats his vegies raw. He would happily douse any dinner in ketchup, and knows more trivia about Dr Who than most of the planet. He has a wicked sense of humour, even if we dont all understand the punchlines. He makes, and keeps, friendships. He can now recognise and respond to others emotions. He can self-regulate, and minimise his anxieties.

So, there is light at the end of the tunnel, I am sure of it. We have many challenges that lay ahead, I am sure, but I am feeling positive about it.

So my first linkspam is this: Autism Victoria. Some people say YAY, some people poopoo them. But no matter what, they have a killer resource library. It was from here that I borrowed a book that changed our lives: The Dragons of Autism by Olga Holland.

Autism Victoria’s website is well worth a look, no matter where you live. It even has a plethora of great linkage.

So please, tomorrow, spend a little time reading. Spend a moment donating, where ever you feel it’s needed most. And if you know another parent or carer of an autistic child, please reach out and talk with them. They probably dont want to hear that ‘you know how they feel’ or ‘it will get better*’, they just need an ear to listen. The diagnosis process is scary, and the future even scarier.

*But it gets better, it really does.

I am SO pleased this is finally finished! I loved the pattern, even if the endless ribbing to finish was a little tedious.

It fits well, and I think will grow with a wash. I havent blocked it, intentionally!

This project has me totally in love with the Bendigo 10Ply Luxury Yarn. I want to roll around in it…

What a spoilt, spoilt gal I am..

First, William is student of the week this week! He’s stoked!

Off to Vivienne’s house to install her wireless router, and I take my handspun for some TLC and expert plying. I come home with this, totally knittable yarn!

We stop off in Bayswater (Baysvotten – Poo Water in Swedish, thanks Lisa!) on the way home, and I bought a HEAP of beautiful herb seedlings. I forget if I mentioned the obvious, but the drought/evil summer KILLED my beautiful vegie patch. Not one thing survived, apart from my potted strawberries, rosemary, and 2 tomato plants which provided ONE tomato EACH. Not impressive. These herbs are a welcome addition to my potted herbs, and a welcome addition to my cooking again. Oh, how I have missed thee, fresh chives! mmm!

I didnt go overboard on the vegie seedlings – I stuck to what I KNOW will survive the winter months.

We dashed over to Clark Rubber to grab a piece of foam to repair a knitting machine that I was given last week. It’s a 1972 Singer 321 Memo Matic in ALMOST usable condition. Instead of wasting time finding a new sponge bar, I am going to reuse the old one and get it cranking. Pics of that another time maybe.

And then, somehow, accidentally, I stimulated the economy again. This is a purchase I have wanted to make for 10 years, and never before has it been affordable. (thanks Kevin!)

I am having an affair with Mr. Dyson. His codename is DC19 Turbine *swoon* He just extracted a dogsworth of fur from the carpet. I bought this from The Good Guys, who a) gave me this for about 20% off, and b) give money back to the local community. It’s a big splashout on something so tedious, but holy fuck I love it. It will keep me off the streets ;)

Picked up kids, and headed home. To two parcels sitting on the mat! WOOOHOOO! My day just got even better! One was a parcel of goodies for Emily from Janine.. an awesome Spy set thing and books. She LOVES it. I will get a pic perhaps when I am allowed to.

And last but definately not least… a box from Dana up in Bathurst. Addressed to Char S. Loris HAHAHA

GORGEOUS vintage yarn, from her Grandma’s stash. There is a little history behind this, and I am feeling very blessed to be looking after it now. Inside was a pile of patterns and clippings, and I HAD to take a pic of a few gems:

Clearly the one thing missing in my life is a crocheted bikini. I’ll get right onto that. Might make a nice wedding gift for Lorna and Mark? No?

Today has totally rocked in a totally materialistic way. Awful, but awesome. Now to go and cook Neil and nice dinner to make up for spending such an INSANE amount of cash on a vacuum cleaner. Actually, dinner might not do it..

  4. Cupcake

    December 12, 2008 by sunrisesister

I spent my morning baking up over 2 dozen cupcakes for William’s party tomorrow. The cake bit wasn’t fabulous (Note to self – stick to what you know, don’t fiddle with recipes!) but I brightened them up with some extremely colourful icing and decorations.

Just gotten home from a very slow, wet drive home, via the Butcher’s shop. Ordered our christmas carcasses, and piked up an order of meat for the deep freezer. We should be set for food until January!
