  1. Springtime Garden

    October 3, 2009 by sunrisesister

Recent rains have meant that everything is blooming, budding, and GREEN! I just spent an hour mowing the lawn AGAIN, and it’s looking much healthier than it was in February.

I thought I’d share some of the things in our garden with you..
    lemons fig tree
    corner loquats

Lemons on our tree, we have a grafted tree, so we enjoy two varieties every year in abundent supply. This is why I want an ice cream machine! Next, the fig tree waking up; then the corner where the side beds meet the loquat tree; which is fruiting again!

    aloe babies hydrangeas budding
    Oleander that wont die lawn

Aloe vera plant STILL having babies like mad! Last year I gave away 12 plants to friends, but I think this year will need to move her into her own area in the ground. Next, our hydrangea plants starting to bud, and produce amazing white/blue flowers; the oleander plant that wont die! This has been attacked with a chainsaw, doused in petrol, and dug around, and yet WONT die! Poisonous, too! And lastly, our huge lawn!

    lavendar Peaches
Bird of paradise Vegie patch - Before!

Lavender bush – one of many in the front garden. They attract bees and beautiful lorikeets! Great for bird watching, and smell amazing as you brush past them on the way to the car. Next, a teeny tiny peach! A bird of paradise flower peeking over the back fence. And… our very neglected vegie patch. A mess of grass, weeds, and nasturtiums! There are some potatoes hiding in there, so the whole thing needs to be dug over.

And lastly.. my favourite feature of our garden..

    Slutty dog is slutty

How can you resist that? Scratch mah belleh!

  2. Winter/Spring Garden

    more chard pumpkin
    Sunflower rosemary

The summer wasnt kind to us. To be blunt, we lost ALL of our annual outlay on vegie seeds and seedlings, not to mention the time we put in. All because of one day. Black Saturday! The greenery just couldnt quite handle 48 degrees. Of course, we lost some vegies, many lost a lot more :( We havent been out there since, to be honest, as it was just too depressing.

This is what the local road to the train station looked like..

But I am thinking this year we might stick to the simple things – chard, lettuces, and the like. And spuds! They practically grow themselves, without any intervention!

The amazing Bel shared this link, and I have to say, it has me busting to get some more seedlings!

What a spoilt, spoilt gal I am..

    IMG_2714

First, William is student of the week this week! He’s stoked!

Off to Vivienne’s house to install her wireless router, and I take my handspun for some TLC and expert plying. I come home with this, totally knittable yarn!

    IMG_2712 IMG_2713

We stop off in Bayswater (Baysvotten – Poo Water in Swedish, thanks Lisa!) on the way home, and I bought a HEAP of beautiful herb seedlings. I forget if I mentioned the obvious, but the drought/evil summer KILLED my beautiful vegie patch. Not one thing survived, apart from my potted strawberries, rosemary, and 2 tomato plants which provided ONE tomato EACH. Not impressive. These herbs are a welcome addition to my potted herbs, and a welcome addition to my cooking again. Oh, how I have missed thee, fresh chives! mmm!

    IMG_2710 IMG_2711

I didnt go overboard on the vegie seedlings – I stuck to what I KNOW will survive the winter months.

We dashed over to Clark Rubber to grab a piece of foam to repair a knitting machine that I was given last week. It’s a 1972 Singer 321 Memo Matic in ALMOST usable condition. Instead of wasting time finding a new sponge bar, I am going to reuse the old one and get it cranking. Pics of that another time maybe.

And then, somehow, accidentally, I stimulated the economy again. This is a purchase I have wanted to make for 10 years, and never before has it been affordable. (thanks Kevin!)

I am having an affair with Mr. Dyson. His codename is DC19 Turbine *swoon* He just extracted a dogsworth of fur from the carpet. I bought this from The Good Guys, who a) gave me this for about 20% off, and b) give money back to the local community. It’s a big splashout on something so tedious, but holy fuck I love it. It will keep me off the streets ;)

Picked up kids, and headed home. To two parcels sitting on the mat! WOOOHOOO! My day just got even better! One was a parcel of goodies for Emily from Janine.. an awesome Spy set thing and books. She LOVES it. I will get a pic perhaps when I am allowed to.

And last but definately not least… a box from Dana up in Bathurst. Addressed to Char S. Loris HAHAHA

GORGEOUS vintage yarn, from her Grandma’s stash. There is a little history behind this, and I am feeling very blessed to be looking after it now. Inside was a pile of patterns and clippings, and I HAD to take a pic of a few gems:

Clearly the one thing missing in my life is a crocheted bikini. I’ll get right onto that. Might make a nice wedding gift for Lorna and Mark? No?

Today has totally rocked in a totally materialistic way. Awful, but awesome. Now to go and cook Neil and nice dinner to make up for spending such an INSANE amount of cash on a vacuum cleaner. Actually, dinner might not do it..

  4. Vegie Patch

    November 16, 2008 by sunrisesister

Well, i *finally* got outside to check on the progress of the vegie patch. I have to confess, I am the type of gardener that goes out occasionally, picks whats ready, throws some worm poo on, and leave it alone again. It’s all going very well though – everything has shot up, and even the sunflower seeds and nasturtiums I chucked in while digging have sprouted! So much for a ‘mulching’ corner – it’s turned into a fertile little area!

(CLICK ON IMAGES TO SEE BIGGER!)

my potted plant monitors strawberry pot

Strawberry pot, and some coriander that has gone to seed (oops!) Maya is a shocker – she spots a ripe one, and it’s gone. We dont get a look-in.

    tomatoes

This tomato pot was such a success, I thought I would use it again. I got 3 seedlings from uni ($1 each, score!) and they are ALREADY fruiting! WOW!

    the vegie patch potato flower

    potato flower

Here it is! The potato plants survived the mad winds we had, and are flowering. They do take up a bit of space, but they are such fun for the kids to dig up, I couldnt resist. There is *nothing* like a home grown spud.

    rainbow chard more chardrainbow chard

This is rainbow chard. I have grown this many times before. We recently discovered it’s tastiness on home made pita pizza, with pesto and feta. mmmm.

    pumpkin

The pumpkins, two varieties. They take up HEAPS of room, so we decided to let them go feral on the boundary and leave them.

    beans

Beans. A few diff ones. Purple podded, and some mange tu. Using recycled chicken wire and tree branches!

    Zucchini (courgette)

Zucchini (courgette) and button squash. YUM!!!!

    rosemary parsley in seed

The herbs are doing well – but my parsley has gone to seed! I will have to re-harvest and see if I can get it going again for summer.

    rescued flowersloquat tree

Some pot-bound pretty stuff I rescued from uni (those horticulture boys dont seem to care about the flowers! too busy studying ‘hydroponics’, i think..)

The loquat tree is *this* close to fruiting.. come on girl!

    aloe vera

And finally, my aloe vera that had 7 babies. She was looking *so* sick over winter, I came this close to sending her to the vegie patch corner to die in peace. But look! She has shed her dead leaves, and is BACK!!! Clever girl!

Everything is so beautiful and green after the recent rain.. I just wish we had chooks :)

  5. Erected!

    September 13, 2008 by sunrisesister

*snigger* The FENCE, that is! It’s up, and it looks fab. Sadly our portal to neighbourly discussion is now cut off, and the dogs can no longer share tennis balls thru the missing palings. But I am sure they will adjust.

In other news, everything about this is right. I want that NOW. Yummo.

    I spent the afternoon knitting a second calorimetry for me, cos I had the rest of the skein leftover, and it looked so good on Emily. We then spent a couple of hours planting our vegie seedlings;

    Zucchini (Courgette)

    Button squash (yellow)

    2 types of pumpkin

    Cucumbers

    Eggplant

    Potatoes

    Rainbow Chard (silverbeet)

    Peas

    Purple podded beans

    Coriander

    Nasturtiums

    Sunflowers

And some various plants that I have picked up from the horticulture campus at Uni, and left to wilt.

The whole lot got a good dousing in sunshine, rainwater, and worm juice.
