WIP: Selfish Socks
September 27, 2009 by sunrisesister
After a massive and exhausting week, I broke the knitting drought and started on a new pair of socks. Yes, I actually KNITTED some sock yarn, instead of just hoarding it. And the best bit – they are for ME!
Becomes
The self-striping is great, and the yarn is a delight to knit. It’s the Regia Kafe Fasset stuff, dryer safe, too!
I am planning another big project soon; a wedding shawl and two capelets for a friend’s wedding in May. I am keen to get started soon, so I can beat the sleep deprivation fog that lies ahead. The pattern comes from the book Victorian Lace Today, which by a stroke of luck, a friend was able to lend me! Lots of planning to be done.
This week: We survived chickenpox, school holiday fatigue, bad weather,pre-teen sleepovers, blood sugar problems, and family quarantine.
We also: got to spend time with family, throw a massive BBQ, celebrate a surprise wedding, and welcomed a beautiful new nephew just two days ago.I think that classifies as a good balance, yes?

40 Hour Famine – Completed
August 30, 2009 by sunrisesister
Well, Miss E (also known as The Jungle Girl) finally did her ‘Famine Weekend’ and although it coincided with netball and friends visiting etc etc, she did VERY well. She spent her electricity free days doing crafts like knitting, sewing by hand, making clay beads, as well as reading, whinging and complaining.. ok that last bit wasn’t so fun! She also did a famine from ‘junk food’ but her electricity famine meant she couldn’t eat anything that had been cooked or refrigerated. So she REALLY enjoyed her breakfast this morning
And she is proud to announce that she has raised over $230!!
Thank you to ALL who have donated.. she has managed to go above and beyond her original goal of $100!
Remember, if you still wish to donate, she is collecting until the end of September.. You can click here to do it online
It was also a very interesting exercise to see how reliant these kids ARE on electricity for entertainment.. Especially in these Winter months.

40 Hour Famine
August 2, 2009 by sunrisesister
My eldest daughter Emily (10) is doing the 40 Hour Famine this month. Please consider sponsoring her! Info below:
Hi there,
The world’s biggest food crisis is on now. and you probably didn’t even know it! The Global Food Crisis is into its second year and so far it’s plunged another 100 million people into extreme hunger and poverty.
Did you know ?
* People in over 30 countries are suffering from the effects of the Global Food Crisis.
* There are now over 900 million chronically hungry people around the world, and approximately 1.4 billion live in extreme poverty.
* Malnourished children are more likely to die from illnesses like diarrhoea and malaria.
* Every day, an estimated 25,000 children die from hunger and preventable diseases.Well I’ve had enough of hunger and starvation. This year I’m biting back at the Global Food Crisis and doing the 40 Hour Famine. I’m giving up electricity and processed foods for 8 hours to raise money to help hungry kids affected by the Global Food Crisis.
Would you like to help hungry kids too ? Just $40 helps 5 kids for 1 month! My target is to raise $100.00.
Please donate online now (https://famine.worldvision.com.au/famine.cgi?a=SPONSOR_&pn=29173766-6). My 40 Hour Famine Number is: 29173766-6
Thank you for supporting me and helping hungry kids!
Emily Richardson

Not Much Knitting
July 9, 2009 by sunrisesister
Well, a little bit, but it’s for a gift, so I cant reveal it just yet. But really, not much knitting at all. I havent even completed the Vanilla soaker yet, even though I have just one tiny newborn leg band to complete.
It’s very cute. And very small. Putting it up against my belly, it’s hard to imagine something fitting into it, but it will! The best thing about this pattern is the stretchy crotch. Whoah that sounded wrong!
So my plan of action is to finish this gift knitting, knit up a quick hat for wearing in cold Bendigo (7 more sleeps!) and then to get onto some other stuff like Meo’s and Viv’s mitts. I have serious castonitis, though, so expect some deviation from the plan!
Secretly, I am hanging for the weekend, and then for the cherubs to start back at school on Monday. I *need* to breathe. Tomorrow we are having our Stitch n Bitch at a new location, and I am SO excited! Hopefully the staff will be less snarly and mean, and will manage to make a hot chocolate in less than half an hour.
