  1. Crazy Old Ladies

    July 11, 2009 by sunrisesister

Today as usual, the stitch n bitch turned into a little yarn crawl. This time to The Wool Village, where I hadnt been before, but had been told many times how the little old lady in there was batshit crazy, and HATES people touching things, and that it was floor to ceiling YARN. Well they werent kidding. The place was OVERWHELMING. Just walls of yarn, in no particular order, and at first glance, not much of it was worth looking at.

However, dig for a moment, and you find some GEMS. Old discontinued yarns, colourways, as well as newer designer yarns for DIRT CHEAP. My heart almost stopped as I clutched The Last Bag Of Anchor Magicline In The Shop. My fave cotton, EVER.

I indulged and bought 2 skeins of some Jo Sharp silk georgette, that I found hiding behind a packet of dead muppet. Go figure.

Cleck Country 12ply Globe Multicolour Globe Multicolour

This stuff is destined for soakers/longies – cleck 12ply (which has been discontinued) and some ‘Globe’ yarn that is a BEAUTIFUL colourway!

And these just fell into my hands. Terrible.

The lady was overall, very helpful, and warmed up to us once she realised we were real knitters and not just random idiots. She even brought out the Regia sock yarn to show us, at about half the normal price! I apologise for not getting a pic of the shop – i dont think anyone is game to. It’s something you have to see for yourself! The really funny part was the crazy lady taking a shine to poor N, who ended up being her personal Packet Of Yarn Fetcher from the toppling heights of the piles above!

So spent a crapload of money i wasnt expecting to, but came out with some really awesome goodies. And it’s only 6 sleeps to bendigo!

  2. Outrageous Sex

As I have mentioned before, Colinette Jitterbug is my habit-forming yarn. It has been for a long time. I have about 10 different colourways now, and dont feel guilty in the slightest :) The red is a sumptuous Vatican Pie, and the blue is Salty Dog (yarrrrr!) which the lovely Shan VERY sneakily FORCED into my bag at Sunspun. Enabler alert! Going to Bendigo with her will be dangerous..

And yes, The Sheep Show is just TWO weeks away! Yes! I get to go on a big road trip with my favourite ladies, and spend the weekend yarning and laughing, and most fun: hanging out with Kelli again. Good times.

So as my friend Emma pointed out, I seem to be having many birthdays! Well yes, I am a spoilt, SPOILT girl, and today was no exception.

Expecting BILLS, I was delighted when the sole occupant of my post box was this..

  4. Yarn Crawl

    May 23, 2009 by sunrisesister

Today was an epic day! Heaps of fun, and lots of yarn splurging..

First, we headed into the new Morris & Sons shop in Collins Street, Melbourne, for a stickybeak at the brand new store, and the big sale offerings. It is flashy to say the least! Lots of yarn, but I will say this:

    * It was disappointing to see such a huuuge volume of muppet/jet/cleckheatons/shepherd stuff. I came for some yarn porn! This stuff was distracting, overwhelming, and a little annoying.
    * I was interested to see that their ‘own brand’ yarns were in 2, 4, 6, and 8 ply. Some colours were ‘unique’ and some were ok. But the 6 ply range annoyed me. Why 6ply? 5ply? Maybe, 8 ply? yes. 6ply? Good luck finding patterns.
    * The prices were difficult to locate, making the already crowded shop a little hectic and overwhelming.

    BUT

    * A great location, wonderful exposure for needlecrafts, and room for lots of great stuff to come. I hear not all stock has arrived yet.
    * It was a great buzz to see Marelle from LSG working there! She looked like she was in her element, and she has lots of enthusiasm :) I added a touch of LSG to the day by asking her ‘how much that amazing shit there’ was, and had a giggle.
    * HEAPS of Ravellers were there, and I recognised a few people that I had seen on the boards. Didnt get to say hi in the crowd, but look forward to doing so in Bendigo.

Out of all of the yarn, though, I came home with just two balls of WoolGanics, from there. It was reduced, but not all the colours there grabbed me. However, I did get given a beautiful ‘Hunky Hank’ of NZ wool by Lucy, as a swap for some fibre I sent her way this week. I think this wants to be baby longies, the colour is amazing!

We escaped as another gaggle of people walked in, and headed out to get some lunch. I have had a STRONG DESIRE for Pho all week, and with my tonsils threatening to go Round 2, I convinced Lucy, Knitster and Husbeast-to-be to go to Mekong. I loaded up on chilli, bigtime, and happily sweated and sniffed while bombarding my tonsils and sinuses with hot chill-loaded broth!

More walking, and this time to check out Federation Square for a while. Met back up, had great tea and lemon tart (ice creams for the kids) and where sneaky Knitster presented me with a gorgeous birthday pressie!

This is some of the Bendigo 8ply she dyed with Kool Aid! It’s GORGEOUS! :)

Buuuut, sitting there, we decided that the Yarn Itch had not been scratched! So, only one thing for it! Sunspun!

Where I accidentally bought the following:

    IMG_3220 IMG_3225

    IMG_3222 IMG_3223

    IMG_3227 IMG_3226

2 (more) skeins of Colinette Jitterbug, a skein of the new Kaffe Fausset Regia sock yarn (safe for the clothes dryer! wont felt!) and 2 balls of sublime.

Total splurge. Terrible. Buuuuuut it *was* my birthday yesterday, and I was celebrating! We came home for coffee and a spell with the swift and ballwinder. The air is thick with smoke for some reason, so it’s time to relax inside with some knitting and tv! Phew! What a big day!

  5. Birthday!

    May 22, 2009 by sunrisesister

Today is my birthday! And the first meaningful post in a long time, it seems. Apologies! I lay the blame on sickness, university, hectic family life, and lots of changes happening.

But there has been knitting! And crochet!

    photo 8748348.jpg

Two pairs of crochet mitts, in school colours, for each girlchild. They are made in Bendigo Classic 8ply (crepe construction) so they are warm, and fairly hard-wearing. The girls love them! The boy prefers his gloves..

    8994907.jpg photo photo photo

I cast on Lark, a Vest-Hoodie pattern. Loving it so far, and I’m up to the middle of the body, ready to reattach the top of the pocket. It’s a great pattern, and I can see it getting lots of wear. I am making it in the new Bendigo Luxury 10ply, in black and ruby. I opted for darker colours, as my son is a Wearer of Food! (and sand and dirt and worse)

The February Lady Sweater is taking a short break. For some reason, I got up to the lace section, and fell out of love with it. I wont frog it – it’s going to have a holiday in it’s project bag, until I have the brainspace to work on a big project again.

Now, for the fun part! Like I said, today is my birthday, and I have been so seriously spoiled! My family all live overseas (actually, isnt it ME who lives overseas? ha!) so the joy of Internet Shopping is evident. My mother, who is NOT a knitter, asked me ‘what yarn do you like’ and so I listed a few, not realising this would hit my doorstep..

    IMG_3188 IMG_3186 IMG_3215 IMG_3214

That, my friends, is TWELVE skeins of Malabrigo worsted. Yes. Enough to get naked and roll around in! Uh huh! And, a DELICIOUS Namaste bag, which has already been christened as My New Bag, and filled with current WIP and other usual gear.

And, of course, it’s my turn to recieve goodies in the Ravelry Birthday Swap! The poor tired looking postie gave me this:

    IMG_3191 IMG_3193 IMG_3200 IMG_3209 IMG_3203 IMG_3202 IMG_3205 IMG_3207

Yes, it’s RED RED BEAUTIFUL RED! The gorgeous Falkonfly spoilt me rotten.. Tea cup, tea of all kinds, buttons, chocolate, notebook, book, pincushion, lollies, beautiful YARN and more! I love it ALL! She stalked me well :)

This is in addition to what my beautiful SIL-to be sent me earlier in the week…

    my lush goodies!

A luscious box of Lush goodies! I LOVE this stuff, and spent a good half hour sniffing and umming and ahhing. As a former-soapmaker, I am always admiring other people’s wares and ideas!

So, I have some WIPs to get cracking on, and a nice long 4 week break coming up soon to knit in. But today, I am relaxing and enjoying my spoils :) What a lucky girl I am!
