  1. Weekend Dyepot

    August 16, 2009 by sunrisesister

I dyed up 150gm (3 balls) of the machine wash 8ply I picked up in Bendigo for just $2 each..

Very difficult to catch the right colouring – the light here isn’t great this morning. But the wool feels beautiful and soft, and the dye took BEAUTIFULLY. Not bad for food-dye from the Asian Grocer, at just $2.30 a pop :) I am steering clear of Landscapes dyes while pregnant, even though I have some SERIOUSLY gorgeous 12ply I want to colour!

As for this batch.. well it’s destined to go on the needles today for a verrry special project..

  2. Buttons to Crow About

    August 12, 2009 by sunrisesister

I have been meaning to post this for the last week.. I bought some beautiful hand-made buttons from the VERY talented Teri’s brand new Etsy store.

The three blue ones are *amazing* – they literally glow.

    and a beautiful rainbow one..

  3. The Search For Pho

    August 1, 2009 by sunrisesister

Some dont understand the beauty of Pho. ‘Raw meat floating in hot water’ was one comment this week. But some of us take our Pho very seriously, and in times of crisis (like when Melbourne’s winter gets a little tiresome) and when you are doing all you can to avoid Chicken Flu/Pig Flu/Hamthrax, you need to take action. Involving chilli.

Matt Preston agrees with me! And so he should. Yesterday, C and I heeded his advice and travelled almost 50KM to Footscray (or as it’s often pronounced “Footescray” – thanks Franco Cozzo!) to visit this place. Hung Vuong.

As you can see, mine has been chilli-fied. This is necessary to annihalate any cold/flu bugs lurking in the upper respitory and digestive tracts. It also warms you up, cleans out the airways, and gives you that Pho Buzz. The spring rolls were BRILLIANT. Not a drop of grease. Crisp, crunchy, and delicious wrapped in lettuce leaves and dunked in some chilli sauce.

But you need to have some good chopsticks skills… I grew up in Hong Kong, and have mastered the art of transferring slippery rice noodles from bowl to plate. Some others struggle…

There are some important elements in good pho:

The broth. This has to be cooked for a long time, flavoursome, yet not overly salty.

The noodles. Good, fresh rice noodles, or egg if you prefer.

Thinly sliced beef of chicken. With this I am not overly-adventurous, but the beef is a safe bet every time.

The additions: this is according to taste. I submerge several Vietnamese mint leaves into the broth, followed by a healthy handful of beanshoots, and a squeeze of lemon. Then, a few droplets of the Death Chilli, and swish the lot around. The beanshoots stay crunchy in some physics-defying way, but it gives great flavour.

A bowl of pho is satisfying, healing, and really filling.

So my search for GOOD Melbourne Pho continues. If you have a fave, please leave me a comment! I know of a few in Springvale, but am on the lookout for one a little closer in Box Hill perhaps.

Oh and a few hours later, you may find yourself craving a little something… I highly recommend Trampoline gelati

    C favours the coffee/choc, I am a fruity fan!

  4. FO's: Meret, Woolly Shorts

    July 30, 2009 by sunrisesister

Well it’s been quiet on the blogging front, but there has been knitting. With the new addition of My New Chair, the whole lounge room was rearranged, and my very own craft corner was born. Oh yes. Bad pic:

And so I started knitting Meo’s Mitts FINALLY:

But then came down with a cold/flu thing. That’s what you get from Dr’s waiting rooms, folks! Luckily it didnt last long, and I got to finishing these:

Cute as a boot! Pattern from inside Meagan’s head, so I hope I interpreted them correctly!

I also made something I have been pondering for a long time. And for a lacy hat, it only took 3 hours! God bless 10ply:

Red Meret, BWM Luxury 10ply in Ruby. It’s blocking now with the aid of a plate and tupperware bowl.

So it’s been a quiet-ish week, not much to report. Lots of sickness, Dr’s appointments, and general errands.

  5. WIP: Woolly Shorts

    Globe Multicolour 18984662 IMG_3593

This is a pair of basic wool baby shorts, to be lanolised and used as a soaker. The yarn is Globe, the stuff I bought at the wool village a couple of weeks ago. It’s surprisingly great yarn! Nice stitch definition, great colours, and quite a robust texture. It has a touch of nylon in it, maybe that helps. Yardage is awful, though, at 90m a ball HAHA!

Pattern is coming from Meagan’s brain :) She gave me a pair that she made for her son, and I LOVE the pattern!
