  1. Spring Has Sprung

    September 5, 2009 by sunrisesister

How do we know? Because the hills are quite literally alive.. with the sound of wildlife. It’s like the animals and birds are on something!

This charming fellow below is quite the romantic. He woos the lady possums.. VOCALLY, and all night. Meaning we get little sleep when he’s on top form.

Now, if he could just find the right lady.. one that doesnt leave her babies for US to rescue.. *sigh* We have a possum box guys, go get a room!

  2. 40 Hour Famine – Completed

    August 30, 2009 by sunrisesister

Well, Miss E (also known as The Jungle Girl) finally did her ‘Famine Weekend’ and although it coincided with netball and friends visiting etc etc, she did VERY well. She spent her electricity free days doing crafts like knitting, sewing by hand, making clay beads, as well as reading, whinging and complaining.. ok that last bit wasn’t so fun! She also did a famine from ‘junk food’ but her electricity famine meant she couldn’t eat anything that had been cooked or refrigerated. So she REALLY enjoyed her breakfast this morning ;)

And she is proud to announce that she has raised over $230!!

Thank you to ALL who have donated.. she has managed to go above and beyond her original goal of $100!

Remember, if you still wish to donate, she is collecting until the end of September.. You can click here to do it online :)

It was also a very interesting exercise to see how reliant these kids ARE on electricity for entertainment.. Especially in these Winter months.

  3. Six Months On

    August 6, 2009 by sunrisesister

It’s been six months today since that devastating day known as Black Saturday. A few of the images of that time have been on the news again lately, and it’s brought back lots of emotions. Take a look here at how Marysville and Kinglake are looking these days..

Please take a few moments today to remember those that were lost, and the devastating effect it had on small communities all around Victoria. And to consider the valuable lessons we can learn from it.

Did you know: The last of the fires were only extinguished in June?

  5. Winter/Spring Garden

    August 3, 2009 by sunrisesister

    more chard pumpkin
    Sunflower rosemary

The summer wasnt kind to us. To be blunt, we lost ALL of our annual outlay on vegie seeds and seedlings, not to mention the time we put in. All because of one day. Black Saturday! The greenery just couldnt quite handle 48 degrees. Of course, we lost some vegies, many lost a lot more :( We havent been out there since, to be honest, as it was just too depressing.

This is what the local road to the train station looked like..

But I am thinking this year we might stick to the simple things – chard, lettuces, and the like. And spuds! They practically grow themselves, without any intervention!

The amazing Bel shared this link, and I have to say, it has me busting to get some more seedlings!
