  1. Destash to Destash

    October 19, 2009 by sunrisesister

So, my Collingwood Magpies OBSESSED friend, Andrea (yes Andrea, admit it, the Magpies doorbell gives you away!) had a little destash at the weekend. And by little, I mean we swooped like vultures onto her stash and grabbed some goodies!

Top: Some BWM Allegro (cant resist BWM!) and some yarn bee cotton stuff

Middle: some kind of beautiful squishy alpaca, and 2 balls of Biggan merino (ooer mister, would you like to feel me biggans?)

And 3 balls of some spunky pink wool she got from the 2008 wool show..

Yes, yes, I know, that yarn diet. Well we should talk about that, we really should. But in my defence (again) I shall say that this was a BARTER, and my diet still stands. Right? Riiiiiiight?

  2. Dear Bushells

    October 19, 2009 by sunrisesister

    Dear Bushells.

I love tea. I really do. I don’t even drink coffee. And as a mother of soon to be 4 children, my first 2 cups of the day enable me to get out of the door and on the road without killing anyone. And many a varied brew has passed my lips. Different brands, blends, types, and infusions. And somehow I keep coming back to Bushells. I’m a particular fan of your ’rounds’ variety. It has enough ‘kick in the pants’ for the morning, and enough mellow twang for an afternoon brew.

So today, on my fortnightly shop, I reached for a discounted box of ‘Extra Strong’ at $3.50 for the first time. What can I say, I’m experimental. I got them home, opened my almost empty teabag tin, ready for the momentous refill, the kettle already boiling for a test run.

Disaster. So much loose tea in the box, I knew something was wrong. I lifted out a line of bags, and it started raining tea granules into the box. Panic! Closer inspection revealed that the inside fold of at least 3/4 of the bags was not sealed. I rescued the salvagable ones, and made that vital cuppa, in order to regain my composure and assess the situation.

Now yes, I’m sure I could return to the shop with goods and reciept in hand, and get a replacement/refund, but here’s the thing:

We’re talking teabags here, not a laptop.

We live in an ok area, but I can really only handle one dose of the local supermarket bogans in a fortnight.

Shopping with 3 kids while nearly 8 months pregnant isn’t an enjoyable experience. In fact, I’d rather gouge my own eyes out than listen to my 5 year old pester me for a $9 my little pony storybook one more time. I mean, really.

Don’t get me wrong, I love tea. I love your tea. I always will. But these teabags were a big let down. I’m still a fan, and will keep buying Bushells, but just thought I’d explain. I even love your ad, it makes me smile, even when the guy smacks his missus on the bum. That’s us, see.

Yours, in tannin and antioxident enrichment, and good humour.

    Charlotte Betts.

  3. Off The Wagon

    August 30, 2009 by sunrisesister

So clearly the diet wasn’t enough for me, I think I may need some kind of 12 step program or something. But in my defence, I will say three things:

    * We were shopping in a group. This means peer pressure. Also, shopping in the Wool Village means that you are constantly followed and questioned on your choice of yarn.. so there is an element of urgency about the ‘grab and buy, quick!’ feel of the place. Crazy lady wasn’t there, though. That was ok.

    * I spent UNDER $50.

    * The cotton I bought was in the bargain bin, and it was $2 each. And it’s cotton. And it’s discontinued.

    * The Regia sock yarn is about 1/2 the price than it is elsewhere. So really, it’s like I had to.

8Ply Blu Caribe. This wants to be summer baby/girls things. I bought 4 balls of it..

    IMG_3640 IMG_3636

2 Balls each of the Kafe Faussett Regia Designer sock yarn. Look at the colours, people. Loooooook.

So yes, I might have a bit of this stashed.. yes.

Uh….. did someone say ‘They tried to make me go to rehab.. i said NOOO NOOO NOO!’

  4. Shawl Flu

    August 25, 2009 by sunrisesister

I have knitter’s block. This happens when you have finished some gift-knitting ahead of schedule, and can knit whatever you like. But there is almost TOO much choice out there, and my queue is filled with ‘someday’ projects.

I declared a yarn diet some weeks ago, which is fine. In fact, I am totally ok with this – I have MORE than enough beautiful yarn to keep me occupied for a long time. That’s not the problem. The problem lies with there being an inexhaustible supply of AMAZING patterns online. And I am finding myself leaning towards yet another shawl. ARGH! Lace knitting, you evil temptress! Also having an odd amount of dollars sitting in your paypal account doesnt help. That ‘Buy this pattern for only $4.00′ button gets clicked all too easily. *sigh*

So shawl flu seems to be catching.. I am now left struggling to choose between these:

Damson, by Ysolda Teague (who, by the way, could not be any cuter if she tried)

Ishbel, also by Ysolda (yes, still cute)

and Aestlight by Gudrun Johnson – the Shetland Trader, one of my new fave designers.

Of course, lace knitting is impractical, as I knit often at Stitch n Bitch, or with kids around. Which is why I will need some help choosing my new nemesis! I seem to like punishing myself..

And yes, I should be knitting tiny baby things. And I have been, but as fun as that is, I am having a summer baby, so am tempted to wait and see what it’s aspect ratio is like before starting on 3-6 month size knitting. I suspect this baby carries the BeanPole Gene.

So please help me! Leave a comment and tell me which you think would suit/be a good project. I have sock yarn a-plenty, so no worries about breaking the yarn diet.

  5. Bendigo Sheep Show 2009

    July 20, 2009 by sunrisesister

    Wow. Just wow!

    What a great weekend!

I met a tonne of Ravellers in person, saw some adorable sheep, walked and walked and walked and walked.

    Oh and I shopped!

    MY HAUL!

In my defence, some of it was from the mill, and those packets were $20 each from Pear Tree Yarns. But I will totally own up to the rest.

I also bought some beautiful wooden shawl/scarf pins

    Spinning woodie shawl/scarf pins!

The Rocketeers all travelled up and stayed in a cottage together, which of course involved MUCH merriment and silliness! A wonderful weekend, and I cant wait to do it again. Even if I am totally exhausted!

So, let’s get down to business:

The cottage and the view. To be honest, I took bugger-all photos, because, well. I was having too much fun.

    IMG_3525

O…kay. Of course, this show *was* about the agriculture, which is easy to forget when you are drooling over things like this:

    IMG_3528 IMG_3527

Now, I dont have many photos, but there are many who do. Like Kat!

So what did I buy? Well, I bought yarn, wooden pins, jam, soap, woolly socks for gifts back home, and a woollen pillow. I have ALWAYS wanted one, and nearly cried with joy when the seller said they were just $20. Of COURSE i got one, and will probably order one of their amazing wool blankets soon.

But now, for the yarn fumes to overwhelm you:

Donyale Habu Sock Donyale Habu Sock
Donyale Poipool Baby Alpaca sock Donyale Poipool Baby Alpaca sock

Donyale’s amazing sock yarn in ‘Habu,’ and some baby alpaca in ‘poipool’ – this is softer than anything else. Im just stoked that I got to give Donyale a hug! :)

Moseley Park 10 Ply Moseley Park 10 Ply

Two hanks of Moseley Park 10ply superwash (no felting!) yarn. These will be longies, can you see I am prepared for either gender? The ladies at this stall were *lovely* and picking out these two skeins involved lots of chatting and laughter.

    EGMTK Sock EGMTK Sock
    EGMTK Sock EGMTK Sock

2 Skeins of truly pschedelic sock yarn from Ewe Give Me The Knits! Meeting Mandie in person was awesome. she is one passionate fibreholic enabler!

    ms.gusset sock

3 Skeins from ms.gusset – aka Kylie! This was one big mountain of colourful sock yarn, I couldnt resist!

    Touch Yarns Sock

This was actually the virginal purchase! From a craft store in Kyneton, on the way up. Touch Yarns from NZ, 4ply. I had to get this – it’s the EXACT same colourway as my Maya Wrap. (sling)

BWM Machine Wash 8ply BWM Machine Wash 8ply
BWM Classic 12 ply BWM Classic 12 ply

From the Mill – a packet of 8ply superwash ($2.50 a ball!) and some 12ply. All from the backroom, and cheap as chips. The 12ply is destined for soakers and longies, and I’ve already CO another Vanilla!

Pear Tree 12ply Pear Tree 12ply Pear Tree 12ply

I scored THREE of the $20 packs from Pear Tree Yarns. This is good, because their regular skeins are pricey. All 12ply, and lovely and soft.

All in all, an amazing weekend. I came home to a clean house, and I dont think N has ever been so happy to see me!

Next year we might go up for the day, as bub will be around 7 months old. But then again, I could bring bub and pass it over to Kelli. I know she wont object!
